Compared with the Supetar car ferry on Brač, which leaves the same port twelve times a day and lets you board whichever boat you like, line 635 asks for more planning. There are only three crossings each way, the trip is long, and your ticket is tied to one sailing because it doubles as a vehicle reservation. In return it is the car ferry that brings you to Hvar from Split itself.
The core timetable is the same every day. The ferry leaves Split at 08:30, 14:30 and 20:30, and Stari Grad at 05:30, 11:30 and 17:30. Since the morning's first boat sets out from Hvar, a day trip from Split with a car realistically means the 08:30 out and the 17:30 back.
On weekdays a fourth pair also runs, 06:00 from Split and 14:30 from Stari Grad. The timetable originally ended it on 23 October, but a Jadrolinija notice of that date extended it to 6 November, and AOLPP published the amended timetable on 26 October. The AOLPP version is labelled provisional.

Cheaper for walkers than Supetar, dearer for drivers
Walking on to the Stari Grad boat costs €5.90 off-season and under-13s (from age three) €3.00, while a standard car (no longer than five metres, no higher than two) is €35.60. A bigger car, or one with a roof box that takes it over two metres, moves into the €64.70 band.
The car fare excludes everyone inside it, so the driver buys a ticket as well. Summer prices were noticeably higher; from late May until 27 September 2026 an adult was charged €8.40 and a standard car €47.60. Tax and port dues are included, and the return leg costs the same.
| Adult | € 5.90 |
| Child aged 3–12 | € 3 |
| Car up to 5 m long and 2 m high | € 35.60 |
| Car over 5 m or over 2 m high | € 64.70 |
| Motorbike or moped | € 10.10 |
| Bicycle | € 5.70 |
| Caravan or camper up to 5 m | € 68.80 |

Two quays in Split, and a terminal outside Stari Grad
Split ferry port (berths 17 and 18)
The Stari Grad ferry uses the car-ferry berths of Split's main port. On 23 October 2026 the port authority listed berth 18 for the morning and midday departures and berth 17 for the others, with the ferries Faros and Zadar on the route. When buying a vehicle ticket you need to show the car's registration document, so keep the hire paperwork to hand.
Stari Grad ferry port
This is the point most visitors misjudge: the ferry does not dock in Stari Grad's old town but at a separate terminal outside it, on the D116 road. Drivers roll straight off towards the rest of the island. Foot passengers heading for Stari Grad itself, Hvar town or Jelsa need onward transport from the terminal.
South from Split into Stari Grad bay
Heading south from Split with no intermediate calls, the ferry ends its run at the Stari Grad ferry port. How long that takes depends on which Jadrolinija text you read: the PDF timetable says 110 minutes, the route page on its website says 120. No distance is published.
Booking and boarding line 635
- Book your sailing
A ticket on this line is also a reservation for the departure you choose. Buy it online, through Jadrolinija's phone app or from a ticket office.
- Arrive 45 minutes early
Jadrolinija's page for this line wants you there 45 minutes ahead, or a full hour in summer.
- Hire car paperwork
You will be asked for the vehicle registration document when buying a car ticket.
- On foot?
The terminal is outside Stari Grad, so arrange onward transport, or take a catamaran to Hvar town instead.
- 25 and 26 December
The 05:30 from Stari Grad and the 08:30 from Split do not sail.
Stari Grad, Hvar town and the island's other ports
Jadrolinija notes that the historic core of Stari Grad is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The car ferry does not go to Hvar town; from Split that is a catamaran trip, for example on line 9604, which continues to Vela Luka and then Lastovo and carries no vehicles. At the island's eastern tip, the short car ferry from Drvenik to Sućuraj links Hvar with the Makarska Riviera in about half an hour.
In midsummer, between 19 June and 23 August, there were seven sailings in each direction, including a 01:30 departure from Split. There is no 2027 timetable for the line yet.
Split to Stari Grad: your questions answered
Which sailings leave Split for Stari Grad?
Daily at 08:30, 14:30 and 20:30, plus 06:00 Monday to Friday until 6 November. The 08:30 does not run on 25 or 26 December.
Is it worth buying the ticket ahead?
On this line the ticket is also a reservation for a specific sailing, so drivers are better off buying ahead rather than at the quay.
How much time does the trip take?
The timetable says 110 minutes; the operator's own route page puts it at 120.
Does this ferry go to Hvar town?
No. It docks at the Stari Grad ferry port, outside the old town. Hvar town is served from Split by passenger catamarans.
What will I pay with a car out of season?
€35.60 for a standard car, plus €5.90 for whoever is driving and the same again for every passenger.
How early should I arrive?
Jadrolinija asks for at least 45 minutes on this line, 60 minutes in the summer season.
